Make the Road NV members bargains for the DACA Fund!

Make the Road Members gathered in the parking lot outside of our offices, preparing for a big day of sales ahead of them. On Saturday, August 31 community members either set their own booth to sell their items or helped set up a booth of donations, where all the proceeds were going into MRNV’s DACA fund for renewals. Some of the donations varied from clothes and shoes to electronics and small furniture. Even after being a hot day in Las Vegas one of the members donated two jugs full of aguas frescas, a hot commodity for a hot day. For the past month staff and members sold raffle tickets, on the day of the garage sale winners were announced throughout the day.

Our DACA raffle consisted of many great prizes, that were all donated by supportive partners in the community. There were fifteen prizes in total, ranging from gift cards to gift baskets, with the main prize consisting of a one night stay at a cabin in Mt. Charleston. Congratulations to the main prize winner, Ashley, as well as all the other winners; Emma, Grecia, Astrid, Adam, Greciela, Krys, Kathia, Jenny, Maria, Mario, Crystal, Carolyn, and Josefina. Thanks to everyone’s participation, the raffle alone collected $1,195, that’s raised enough for two DACA scholarships.

Why raise funds for DACA? The goal of this was to raise funds for our scholarship fund for DACA renewals. We know that renewing DACA can be very costly for families, especially if there is more than one DACA recipient in the family. With the cost of renewals at $500, the cost quickly adds up in a family causing excessive financial strain. With the scholarship, we hope to ease that financial burden, so that more childhood arrivals have the opportunities they deserve, in the country they call home. We were able to raise enough money to fund four DACA renewals, totaling $2,262!

We thank everyone that contributed by donating an item and we thank our members for volunteering on such an important event for our DREAMers. Stay tuned for more events coming up where you can make a contribution.

If you couldn’t attend and would like to help support a DACA recipient for their renewal, you can donate to our DACA Scholarship Fund here(Link to Donations). To stay informed and get involved, join us at our weekly community meetings and come back to our website for the latest information.
