1. Why Your Vote Matters

What to do if I can't vote

Absentee Ballot Process

Nevada automatically mails a ballot to all active registered voters—no request needed. Ballots must be postmarked by Election Day or hand-delivered by 7 PM on Election Day.

Eligibility:
All active registered voters will receive a mail-in ballot if registered at least 14 days before Election Day.

Returning Your Ballot:

  • Use the provided postage-paid envelope, signed by you.
  • Ensure the ballot is postmarked by Election Day.
  • The Election Department must receive it by 5 PM on the fourth day after Election Day.

Voting in Person:
You can still vote in person if you haven't returned your mail-in ballot. To do so, bring your mail-in ballot to surrender or sign a form affirming you haven’t voted by mail. You can also opt-out of receiving future mail ballots.

Early Voting:
Early voting starts 17 days before the election and ends 4 days prior. Times and locations vary by county.

Election Day Voting:
Polling places open from 7 AM to 7 PM. If you're in line by 7 PM, you can vote.

Ballot Mailing Schedule:
Ballots are mailed no later than 20 days before Election Day for in-state voters and 40-45 days before for out-of-state voters.

Voter Status:
Check your registration status on the Secretary of State’s website.

Tracking Your Ballot:
Track your ballot through the Secretary of State’s resource.

Opting Out of Mail Ballots:
Submit a request 60 days before Election Day to opt out.

Emergency Absentee Ballot:
For emergencies, request an absentee ballot anytime before 5 PM on Election Day.

First-Time Mail Voters:
You may need to submit ID and proof of residency if there's a discrepancy in your registration details.

Signature Issues:
You have until 5 PM on the sixth day after Election Day to resolve any signature issues on your mail ballot.

Overseas and Military Voters:
Find registration and absentee ballot information through the Overseas Vote Foundation.

Eligibility Requirements

To vote in Nevada, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Have lived in Nevada for at least 30 days before the election and in your precinct for 10 days.
  • Be at least 18 years old (pre-registration available at 17).
  • Not have been declared mentally incompetent by a court.

If You've Moved:

  • Update your voter registration at RegisterToVote.NV.gov if you’ve moved within Nevada, changed your name, or switched party affiliation.

Incarcerated Voters & Returning Citizens:

  • You can register to vote immediately after release from incarceration for a felony. Voting rights are not restricted by pretrial detention, misdemeanors, probation, or parole.

Voters Without Traditional Residence:

  • If you don't have a street address, provide a location description. The mailing address on your registration can be a PO box, shelter, or a trusted person's home.

ID Needed for Voter Registration

When registering to vote in Nevada, a valid photo ID is required. If you don’t have one at registration, you’ll need to present it at your polling place on Election Day. The ID should include your photo, prove your identity, and show your current address.

Online Registration:
A DMV-issued Driver's License or ID is necessary. Register HERE!

Paper Registration:
Provide either a valid Nevada Driver’s License/ID number or the last four digits of your Social Security Number. If your ID lacks your current address, bring a utility bill or another government document showing your current address.

Same-Day Registration:
For same-day registration, you must have a valid Nevada driver’s license or ID card and vote in person. Tribal ID cards may also be used if they meet specific requirements. Other forms of identification, like military IDs or passports, cannot be used for same-day registration.

ID Needed for Voting

If your name is on the list at your polling location, you generally don’t need to show ID to vote. However, if you're a first-time voter and didn’t provide ID during registration, you may need to present one at the polls. Acceptable forms of ID include:

  • Current Nevada driver’s license or state ID card
  • Armed Forces ID card
  • Student ID card
  • U.S. Passport
  • Tribal ID card

Official Results

Official results are never available on Election Day. Election officials are working around the clock to count an unprecedented number of ballots, and it’s essential that they take the time to make sure every vote is counted.

Official election results will be uploaded on Nevada’s Secretary of State website as they become available.

Time Off To Vote

Employers must provide employees with up to three hours of paid leave to vote if their work schedule doesn’t allow three hours of free time while polls are open. The amount of leave is based on distance from the polling place:

  • 1 hour: If you live within 2 miles.
  • 2 hours: If you live more than 2 miles but within 10 miles.
  • 3 hours: If you live more than 10 miles away.

This leave must be paid.

Vote by Mail

Nevada is a vote-by-mail state, meaning all registered voters receive a mail-in ballot. If you prefer to vote in person, you can opt out of mail-in voting, but you should not mail in your ballot and vote in person.

In-Person Voting Options:

  • Early Voting: Begins 17 days before the election and ends 4 days before. Days and hours vary by county.

  • Election Day: Polling locations are open from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. You'll be allowed to vote if you're in line by 7:00 PM.

Accessible Voting in Nevada

Ensuring that every individual can vote independently and with dignity is a top priority for Nevada's Secretary of State and county election officials. To achieve this, poll workers receive proper training, and efforts are made to improve the physical accessibility of polling locations.

Nevada also offers the Effective Absentee System for Elections (EASE), an online application for voters with disabilities, allowing them to register, request, mark, and return ballots from home. EASE is available 45 days before elections with federal contests at NVEASE.gov.
