29 Jun Shame On You, SCOTUS: HOW NEVADA WILL PROTECT YOUR REPRODUCTIVE RIGHTS AND MORE
We are immensely ashamed of the Supreme Court of the United States’ (SCOTUS) decision to overturn Roe v Wade—half a century of precedent that protected a woman’s right to abortion. This a direct attack on people with uteruses—and a direct attack on low-income Black and BIPOC comunidades like ours.
“[It’s] unconscionable and will fall hardest on Black and Brown people and immigrants who already face racial disparities in our healthcare system,” shared Make the Road Pennsylvania’s Director, Maegan Llerena in a Make the Road States statement.
In Nevada, abortion is still legal. Nevada Governor Steve Sisolak issued an executive order to bolster abortion protections for out-of-state patients.. This protects providers, prevents agencies from participating in out-of-state investigations, and prevents extradition requests. Nevada law allows abortion up to 24 weeks—or if the patient’s health is at risk.
Moving forward, we want to be a haven of resources and support. We will be working with Make the Road States and our Nevadan community to ensure our members stay informed, starting with an Instagram Live conversation hosted by us and Planned Parenthood of Southern Nevada:
On Thursday, June 30th our Youth Justice Organizer, Kathia Sotelo Calderon and our Economic Justice Organizer, Abe Lugo will speak with MRNV youth leaders on SCOTUS’ decision and its impact on their reproductive rights and futures.
“We need young people across the country now more than ever to become civically engaged and push out a generation that no longer serves our communities and its diverse populations,” said Lugo. “The goal of [the Instagram live conversation] is to highlight what that can look like, how we can support these efforts, and to truly understand what the decision means to the entirety of the nation.”
The 30-minute conversation will begin at 5:00pm (PST) and is open to the public. Please join us.
