What is Paid Sick Days, Why Nevada needs them?

Paid sick days are important for our community! Can you imagine waking up in the morning to find out your child is sick and can’t go to school? First thing in mind is that you can’t miss work because you won’t get paid, there will be consequences and you can potentially lose your job? This is the fear families in Nevada go through when their children get sick or even themselves. Going to work sick is not ideal for anyone, people should have the right to recover and take care of themselves.

Currently in Nevada there is no law that forces businesses to provide paid sick days to their employees. Only some business in our state have established some days as they understand that When workers aren’t forced to choose between caring for loved ones and work, they are more likely to stay in jobs. They understand that we need common sense workplace reforms that reflect the hard realities facing families.

Here is what you need to know about Paid Sick Days:

  •      According to the Institute for Women’s Policy Research, 49 percent of the workforce cannot earn a single paid sick day to use to recover from common illnesses or seek medical care.
  •      For a typical family in the United States without paid sick days, for example, 3.5 days lost to illness are equivalent to the family’s entire monthly grocery budget
  •      Nevada is home to nearly 500,000 Latino workers, who have disproportionately low access to paid sick days
  •      Paid sick days are good for business. Employee turnover is expensive, on average, one fifth of an employee’s annual salary. Paid sick days result in reduced turnover, which leads to reduced hiring and training costs for businesses.
